We will employ staff with a wide range of responsibilities and skill levels, including: camp counselors; camp program specialists and supervisory staff; an Associate Camp Director; and DSS Camp Coordinator.
Daybreak Day CampDaybreak Day Camp is a small, Cambridge-based summer program that works exclusively with children ages 5-11 with emotional and behavioral special needs. Daybreak&rsquos goal is to provide the structure and support which enables children with special needs to successfully enjoy the same camp and social activities all children should experience. The camper to staff ratio is 1:2. Daybreak is located in Cambridge, and runs from July 7-31. (Staff training TBA.) Children are at camp from 8:30am-2:30pm, Monday-Friday. Counselors are expected to be on site from 8:00am-3:30pm. Group Leaders: Looking for camp counselors who have had experience and are interested in working with children 5-11 years old with emotional and behavioral special needs. Will work as co-group leader of groups of 6-8 campers. Qualified applicants should be responsible, highly motivated, enthusiastic, and creative. Previous work with behavioral and emotional special needs children is helpful. (37.5 hours per week, starting at $8.50 per hour) Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. CADC serves predominantly low-income families. The camp is multicultural, multiracial and multiethnic in composition and outlook. Activities are very diverse, including sports, swimming, performance and visual arts, nature and science, field trips, overnights, farming, cooking, and newspaper publishing. 2008 will be the camp&rsquos 39th season. Camp is 5 weeks long (June 30-July 31), with staff training the week prior. Camp is open Monday-Friday, 9am-4pm. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. She or he is responsible for creating and implementing developmentally appropriate activities and workshops to provide participants with awareness and skills in leadership, communication, conflict resolution, developmental needs of children, activity and trip development, and potential jobs and careers. FYO Youth Leader will work with the Camp Director during winter, training the coming summer’s counselors-in-training. This requires 8 5-hour Saturdays over the course of the winter. During the summer, she or he will support the Camp Director in supervising CITs. ($480/wk) City Trips/Urban Awareness Director: Design, schedule and conduct daily trips for 28 campers and their leaders to local cultural and community sites in and around Boston and Cambridge. Sites may include, but are not limited to, museums, zoos, historical sites, community and career resources, etc. Develop and implement age-appropriate, full-day program for different age groups. Help program staff and Group Leaders design activities that will prepare campers for trips and provide follow-up upon return. This position includes pre-camp work a few hours per week beginning in May. Candidates must be an enthusiastic leader and able to take responsibility for off-site activities of campers and their group leaders. ($400/wk, 7 weeks) Multimedia Madness Specialist: Develop and lead a variety of age-appropriate, engaging library, literature, computer, newspaper and other media-based activities for groups of 14 campers. Facilitate design and production of 2 camp newspapers. Serve as media resource person for camp. Work with camp staff to plan and coordinate activities and ensure program and thematic continuity, and participate in daily camp routines. Qualified applicants will have a passion for children, experience working with children in groups and be creative and resourceful. (Starts at $350/wk, 6.5 weeks) Visual Arts Specialist: Develop and lead a variety of age-appropriate active and engaging art-based activities for groups of 14 campers. Serve as creative arts resource person for camp. Work with camp staff to plan and coordinate activities and ensure program and thematic continuity, and participate in daily camp routines. Qualified applicants will have a passion for children, experience working with children in groups and be creative, resourceful and mature. (Starts at $350/wk, 6.5 weeks) Performance Arts Specialist: Develop and lead a variety of age-appropriate activities that focus on using music, dance and drama-based activities for groups of 14 campers. The goal is to give the campers a creative outlet and help them develop their own capabilities individually and as a group. There are 2 parent days during the summer at which campers perform. There is an-end-of-camp talent show that the Specialist will help prepare and supervise. Qualified applicants will have a passion for children, experience working with children in groups and be creative, resourceful and mature. (Starts at $350/wk, 6.5 weeks) Sports Specialist: Develop and lead a variety of age-appropriate sports, team-building and alternative competitive/non-competitive games and activities for groups of 16 campers. Serve as sports/games resource person for camp. Integrate into the activities the importance of exercise and good health to the campers’ physical and mental wellbeing. Work with camp staff to plan and coordinate activities and ensure program and thematic continuity, and participate in daily camp routines. Qualified applicants will have a passion for children, experience working with children in groups and be creative, resourceful and mature. (Starts at $350/wk, 6.5 weeks) Unit Leaders (3 positions): Coordinate, support and supervise 4 camper groups and their Group Leaders by providing positive individual and group support. Act as liaison between groups and the Camper Support Director. Help plan and facilitate some group and all-unit/all-camp activities. Candidates must be able to work closely with other staff members. This position includes pre-camp work a few hours per week beginning in May. (Starts at $350 / wk, approximately 6.5 weeks) Group Leader (16 positions): Co-leadership of co-ed groups of 14 campers. Campers are assigned to groups by age. Group leaders are responsible for the safety, supervision and engagement of campers assigned to group. Group leader to camper ratio is 1:7. Work with campers and motivate to participate in group and all-camp activities. Build group cohesiveness and cooperation. Participate with campers in all activities. Prepare and lead age-appropriate activates--games, sports, crafts, storytelling, etc. Qualified applicants will have a passion for children, experience working with children in groups and be creative, resourceful and mature.
